I had a deafblind class that taught me a lot in the short time I had to work with them. I remember researching articles and found one where the school taught the deafblind kids self help skills by putting them in an apartment on campus after they had accomplished a certain amount of skills.
One of the ideas that was very useful with my kids was to keep a little box of cutup paper for vacuuming. (Great recycling idea, too!) When it was vacuum time I sprinkled the bits of white and light colored paper all over the dark classroom carpet. The student who was assigned to vacuum that day could see the paper when he couldn't see the dust. When all of the paper bits were vacuumed up then he could tell that the floor was clean and that he'd covered every spot of carpet with the vacuum.
With one particular student I could not allow him to see where I hid the box of paper, nor could I let him see my teacher-aide or I sprinkle the paper. He would try to either dump the box and make sure it was empty when it was his turn to vacuum or he would try to stop us from making a mess for him to clean up. (He was too funny).
