I'm a stickler for communication between parents and teachers. I think it should be more diligently kept up with between parents and teachers of the littlest ones and those with multiple disabilities as these kids may not always be able to verbalize or answer the question "So how was your day?"
I used to write daily in notebooks for my deaf-blind kids and for each of my preschoolers. Believe me when I tell ya that teachers appreciate a note from home saying how the child's evening was. Knowing a child stayed up half the night, that a special project was tried at home, that a child's meds were changed, helps out a lot!
Poohbalto has an excellent idea that helps with lost notebooks. She is suggesting her child's teacher emails her when there are concerns and questions. This is a cool way to notify parents with emails of upcoming field trips and other school events as well. Teachers can continue to send home notes and/or notebooks for parents without email.
This idea makes for easier record keeping on communication for both parents and teachers.

Nowadays, when I work summer school with the younger and less verbal children, I keep a folder on the computer for each child and print out a daily copy of the day's activities to send home for parents. I also keep folders on flash drive. tThen I can email from the folders and make hard copies when I need.
