[shadow=red,left,300]No Spoiling![/shadow]
I have seen children with visual impairments who are self sufficient, respectful, studious, and quite independent. One thing they have in commomn is parents who decided that things were not going to be "special" around the house because they were blind. Sensable modifications are made for the blind but other than that their children had the same chores, house rules and privileges as the sighted children in the house.
On the other hand, there are children who wait for someone to do everything for them that they should have learned to do for themselves. They are easily frustrated, give up easily, whine, dependent, lazy and often not as good in school....because someone has always responded to the whining and their refusal to do what is good for themselves.
What's the difference? Spoiling. It may seem like a loving thing to do to pity and do as much as we can for a blind child but to teach them to do for themselves is more of an expression of love. If any child is expecting an adult or the world to always hand things to them, that child is in for a rude awaKening! Besides that he/she does not learn to do things for herself and others will eventually avoid him/her. Spoiled children are done a great disservice by being spoiled.
I've seen parents of spoiled children blame everything and everyone for their child's problems. If only everyone else would cooperate and give my child what she wants. Why can't they understand that? The parents begin to lose their own lives as they center everything around the child and they become the only sane spot in the world of everyone else who are simply insane and simply will not cooperate.
I've seen too many parents deny their child a proper education because he/she doesn't like to do that so we don't make her/him do anything that he/she doesn't want to do. When that "thing" they don't want to do is exploring her surroundings tactilely, how is a child without vision to learn to read Braille?
Ouch! Was that your toe I stepped on?
