Source: Deaf Education Project www.deafed.netThe Captioned Media Program (CMP) is now the Described and Captioned Media Program (DCMP)! A new five-year $7.5 million cooperative agreement with the U.S. Department of Education showcases the Described and Captioned Media Program (DCMP). Building upon the Captioned Media Program's previous work, DCMP will now provide free-loan accessible educational media to students who are deaf or hard of hearing and also to those who are blind or visually impaired. Video description refers to an addition narrartion track for blind and visually impaired viewers of visual media. The description narrator talks through the presenttation, describing what is happening on the screen during the natural pauses in the audio (and sometimes during dialogue if deemed necessary). Only 15% of educational videos, 5% of educational CD-ROMs, and 1% of Internet content is captioned; even fewer educational media contain video description. The DCMP will not only caption educational media fr deaf students, but will also video describe it for blind and visually impaired students. For more information, visit the Described and Captioned Media Program (www.dcmp.org). All above information taken from 10/02/06 Press Release of the National Association of the Deaf (http://www.nad.org/nadcoopagreementpr).
